Reasons to avoid the Smith squat
A false sense of security.
You’ll take more risks on the Smith machine because the bar is fixed. You may load more weight than you can handle since it’s easier to hold the bar. There are numerous reports of injuries.
The movements aren’t natural.
In a squat with free weights, your body lowers in a curved motion. Smith machines force your body to produce fixed, unnatural movements.
Knee pain from exercising on Smith machines is common.
It forces your body into fixed movements and puts excessive strain on your knees.
Lower back injury.
The fixed bar tends to make you lean against it and rest, and the machine forces you to perform unnatural movements. You’re pressing your lower back and neck muscles against the bar.
You won’t strengthen your stabilizing muscles (such as your abs) or improve your balance and coordination.
All exercises become easier and feel less strenuous since the Smith machine balances the weight for you.
You won’t get as strong as you would with free-weight squats.
You’ll lift a lighter load when you switch to free weights.
Fewer muscles.
Free weights force you to balance the weight, making the exercise more “difficult” for your body. This produces a greater adaptive response.
Smith machine or free-weight squat? Which is the better option?
The biggest difference between a barbell squat and a Smith machine squat is how far forward you can push your feet.
When using a barbell, there’s only one position—the feet are directly beneath the bar. In contrast, a Smith machine follows a fixed path, so there’s no need to balance it, allowing you to move your feet to different distances.
Want to increase your lower-body strength? Well, the free-weight squat is the ideal exercise for you!
That’s because if you squat correctly, your lower body will gain more strength and endurance.
This will lead to better performance in other physical activities, sports, and some simple daily activities.
Focus on compound exercises and forget trendy workouts!

Please, I’ve said this many times, but it’s always good to remember … lol
Don’t make up exercises or jump on the bandwagon of some influencer who kicks their leg up and says it’s good for your butt…
Stick to the basics.
