How to use the Smith machine without feeling it in your lower back
🏋🏻 REASONS TO AVOID THE SMITH MACHINE SQUAT AND PREFER THE BARBELL SQUAT
1️⃣ A false sense of security. You take more risks on the Smith machine because the bar is fixed. You can load more weight than you can handle, since you can hold the bar more easily. There are numerous reports of injuries.
2️⃣ The movements are not natural. In a free-weight squat, your body descends in a curved movement. Smith machines force your body to perform fixed, unnatural movements.
3️⃣ Knee pain from Smith machine exercises is common. It forces your body into fixed movements and puts extra strain on your knees.
4️⃣ Lower-back injury. The fixed bar tends to make you lean and rest against it, and the machine forces you to perform unnatural movements. You are pushing your lower-back and neck muscles against the bar.
5️⃣ Contrary to popular belief, beginners SHOULD AVOID this exercise, because a lack of motor control can increase the risk of injury and hinder learning the correct movement in the future. Smith machines balance and stabilize the weight for you because the bar is fixed. You will not strengthen your stabilizer muscles (such as your abs) or improve your balance and coordination.
6️⃣ All exercises become easier and feel less challenging because the Smith machine balances the weight for you. You will not get as strong as you would with free-weight squats. You will lift less weight when you switch to free weights.
7️⃣ Fewer muscles. Free weights force you to balance the weight, making the exercise more challenging for your body. Greater adaptive response.

Smith machine or free-weight squat? Which is the better option?
The biggest difference between the barbell squat and the squat on the Smith machine is how far forward you can push your feet.
When using a barbell, there is only one position—the feet are directly under the bar. In contrast, a Smith machine follows a fixed path, so you don’t need to balance it and can place your feet at different distances.
Do you want to increase lower-body strength? Well, the free-weight squat is the ideal exercise for you!

That’s because, if you squat correctly, your lower body will gain more strength and endurance.
This will lead to better performance in other physical activities, sports, and some simple daily activities.
Focus on compound exercises and forget trendy workouts! There are several proven studies showing that these exercises are better.
