Where does the step go in a lunge?
The Smith machine lunge is very similar to the Bulgarian split squat. The difference is that in the lunge, the step is in front of you, while in the Bulgarian split squat, the step is behind you. There are variations that don’t use the Smith machine; you can do them with dumbbells or weight plates (which allow for a secure and comfortable grip), as shown in the video.
Among all the gimmicky exercises we come across online, this one doesn’t get much attention. In this variation, elevating the back leg shifts your center of gravity more toward the front leg, which consequently increases the load on it (in addition to any weight you may be carrying).
Step
The step considerably increases the difficulty because it prevents the supporting leg from generating force. This is one of the best exercises for the lower body, and when performed through a full range of motion, it works the glutes intensely!
It’s often compared to the Smith machine lunge, and people are always wondering which one is better. There isn’t a “better” one… if you perform them correctly, they’ll definitely deliver results.
Difficulty of the Bulgarian split squat
One caveat: many people consider the Bulgarian split squat more difficult precisely because it’s less popular than its “cousin,” the lunge, haha. 😉 What about you? Which of the two do you prefer?
Is a step lunge a good exercise?
A step lunge is a great option for anyone looking to develop their lower body.
In addition to strengthening your legs and glutes, this exercise activates your core muscles!
To get better results, it’s important to lower yourself as far as possible, allowing more muscles to be recruited.

Guidance from qualified professionals (such as physical therapists or personal trainers) is essential to accurately assess these postural imbalances so that personalized, more effective methods can be applied during your workout.
