How to do a barbell squat
🏋🏻 REASONS TO AVOID THE SMITH MACHINE SQUAT AND PREFER THE BARBELL SQUAT
1️⃣ A false sense of security. You may take more risks on the Smith machine because the bar is fixed. You may load more weight than you can handle since it is easier to hold onto the bar. There are numerous reports of injuries.
2️⃣ The movements are unnatural. In a free-weight squat, your body lowers in a curved motion. Smith machines force your body to perform fixed, unnatural movements.
3️⃣ Knee pain resulting from Smith machine exercises is common. The machine forces your body into fixed movements and overloads your knees.
4️⃣ Lower back injury. The fixed bar tends to make you lean against it and rest, and the machine forces you to perform unnatural movements. You are pushing your lower back and neck muscles against the bar.
5️⃣ Contrary to what you might think, beginners SHOULD AVOID this exercise, because a lack of motor awareness can increase the risk of injury and hinder learning the correct movement in the future. Smith machines balance and stabilize the weight for you because the bar is fixed. You will not strengthen your stabilizer muscles (such as your abs) or improve your balance and coordination.
6️⃣ All exercises become easy and feel lighter because the Smith machine balances the weight for you. You will not get as strong as you would doing a free-weight squat. You will lift less weight when you switch to free weights.
7️⃣ Fewer muscles. Free weights force you to balance the weight, making the exercise harder for your body. This produces a greater adaptive response.

Smith machine or free-weight squat? Which is the better option?
The biggest difference between a barbell squat and a Smith machine squat is how far forward you can push your feet.
When using a barbell, there is only one position—the feet are directly under the bar. In contrast, a Smith machine follows a fixed path, so you don’t need to balance the bar and can place your feet at different distances.
Want to build lower-body strength? Well, the free-weight squat is the ideal exercise for you!

That’s because if you squat correctly, your lower body will gain more strength and endurance.
This will lead to better performance in other physical activities, sports, and some simple daily activities.
Focus on compound exercises and forget about trendy workouts! There are several studies demonstrating that these exercises are better.
